Cristiano Ronaldo 'bet' Real Madrid team-mates he'd win La Liga Golden Boot when Barcelona icon Lionel Messi was ELEVEN goals ahead

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his superb scoring streak on Sunday night with four goals in Real Madrid's 6-3 win over Girona.

Ronaldo has now netted in eight straight games in all competitions and has 18 goals in his last nine La Liga outings.

His current form is in stark contrast to earlier in the season. After firing a blank in Real's win over Las Palmas on November 5, Ronaldo had just one goal having played seven league games, while his rival Lionel Messi was 11 strikes ahead of him.

At this point, according to Marca, Ronaldo made a bet with his Real team-mates.

Ronaldo is said to have wagered that he would finish the season in possession of La Liga's Golden Boot.

After his four-goal haul at the weekend, the 33-year-old Portuguese is second in the race for the top-scorer's gong in Spain — one ahead of Luis Suarez and three behind Messi.

Both Real and Barca have nine league matches remaining, including May's Clasico at the Nou Camp.

Despite still trailing Messi in the goals tally, Ronaldo actually has a better strike-rate than his rival this season.

Ronaldo, who has played five fewer matches, has averaged a goal every 92 minutes, with Messi taking 98 minutes per strike.
